Tuesday March 15th marked the last day statewide and congressional candidates in Pennsylvania could circulate and file nomination petitions to get on the ballot for the 2022 Pennsylvania Primary. Plenty is at stake in the Keystone State, with Governor Tom Wolf (D) term-limited, Lieutenant Governor John Fetterman (D) seeking the democratic nomination for U.S. Senate, and incumbent U.S. Senator Pat Toomey (R) not seeking re-election.
Candidates for governor were required to submit 2,000 signatures from registered voters from their respective political parties, including at least 100 from each of at least 10 counties. Candidates for lieutenant governor were required to submit 1,000 signatures, including at least 100 signatures from each of at least 5 counties. Lastly, candidates for U.S. Senate were required to submit 2,000 signatures with no county requirements.
Here are the statewide candidates who filed nomination petitions to appear on the ballot for the 2022 Pennsylvania Primary.
Governor
Current Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro is lone candidate who filed petitions to appear on the democratic primary ballot.
On the GOP side, 10 candidates filed, including Doug Mastriano (state Senator), Lou Barletta (former Congressman), Dave White (former Delaware County Councilman), Jason Richey (Attorney), Joe Gale (Montgomery County Commissioner), Bill McSwain (former U.S. Attorney), Jake Corman (state Senate President Pro Tempore), Melissa Hart (former Congresswoman), Charlie Gerow (Conservative Activist), and Nche Zama (Cardiothoracic Surgeon).
Lieutenant Governor
Three democrats filed petitions this year for Lieutenant Governor, including Brian Sims (state Representative), Austin Davis (state Representative), and Raymond Sosa (2018 candidate for LG). Notably, Josh Shapiro and Austin Davis are running as a ticket, even though both offices are elected separately in Pennsylvania.
Nine republican candidates filed petitions for Lieutenant Governor, including Clarice Schillinger (Founder of Back to School PA PAC and Keeping Kids in School PAC), Teddy Daniels (Combat Veteran and Retired Police Officer), Rick Saccone (former State Representative), Carrie DelRosso (state Representative), Russ Diamond (state Representative), John Brown (Northampton County Councilman), Chris Frye (Mayor of New Castle), James Jones (former Congressional candidate), and Jeff Coleman (former State Representative).
U.S. Senate
Running to replace GOP incumbent U.S. Senator Pat Toomey on the democratic ticket will be Malcolm Kenyatta (state Representative), Conor Lamb (Congressman), Kevin Baumlin (Doctor), Alexandria Khalil (Jenkintown Borough Council), and John Fetterman (Lieutenant Governor).
Republican candidates hoping to succeed Toomey are Kathy Barnette (Conservative Political Commentator), Jeff Bartos (Real Estate Developer), Mehmet Oz (Celebrity Doctor), Carla Sands (former Ambassador to Denmark), Dave McCormick (former Hedge Fund Executive), Sean Gale (Attorney), and George Bochetto (Attorney).
State Legislative Races
On March 16th, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court found that the state legislative maps agreed on by the Pennsylvania Legislative Reapportionment Commission are constitutional and released an updated election calendar for state legislative offices.
Per the Court’s order, candidates for state legislative offices and for state party committees have only 10 days to circulate and file nomination petitions, between March 18th and March 28th. Usually this process takes place over multiple weeks, but the Court reduced the timeframe in order to maintain the current May 17th primary election date.
